The new 2016 BMW 750Li xDrive drifts in the Alps

The flagship model – until the rumored M760Li arrives – is the 750Li, the long-wheelbase version powered by an V8 engine under the hood. In the U.S., BMW sells the 750i xDrive model which is in fact the long-wheelbase version. The 750Li is fitted with a revised 4.4 liter TwinPower twin-turbocharged V8, with the turbos mounted in between the v-shaped cylinder bank, and will develop 445 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque which will be available at 1,800 rpm. This revised V8 is also a ULEV (Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle) and is far more efficient than the outgoing model’s. BMW managed to do this by changing the compression ratio, from 10:0:1 to 10:5:1 and the addition of the latest Valvetronic and Double Vanos systems. This engine also marks the first time in a production car that the intake manifold has been partially integrated into the cylinder head, allowing for less airflow resistance and smaller exterior dimensions. While many customers won’t take the 7er limousine into the mountains, BMW showed us that the flagship model is more than capable to handle the snow and off-road terrain.   [Source: BMW Blog written by Horatiu Boeriu ] Read more

Top Gear races BMW i8 vs M4

We’ve seen videos like this before, racing the BMW i8 against highly revered sports cars to see if the three-cylinder hybrid has what it takes to compete. It’s a popular idea, because the i8 is actually a very fast car, despite the fact that it only has a 1.5 liter three-cylinder engine and is a plug-in hybrid. It’s unexpectedly quick, enough to take down some of the best sports cars on the market. Well, this is exactly what Top Gear has done by racing the BMW i8 against its own sibling, the BMW M4. At first, it doesn’t necessarily seem like a fair fight, as the M4 has 425 hp while the BMW i8 has a combined 357 hp. The M4 also has a six-cylidner engine while the i8 only has three. The M4 has two turbochargers while the i8 has one. So it seems like the M4 has the clear advantage. However, it does even up, as the i8 is around 200 lbs lighter than the M4 and has all-wheel drive to help with the launch off of the line. The BMW i8 also has the benefit of using electric motors, which provide 100 percent of their torque at ... Read more

30 Years Of BMW All-Wheel Drive System

After the arrival of the Audi Quattro in 1980, the interest in all-wheel drive (AWD) performance cars rose in Europe. While the fad lasted for a short period of time, AWD saloons and estates became popular among the skiing enthusiasts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These cars had all-weather capabilities, so customers preferred them over the clunky SUVs riddled with poor mileage, lackluster styling and substandard handling unless they wanted to drive on very rough terrains. It was then that BMW introduced the 325i ‘Allrad’ sedan (later called the 325iX) at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, ushering in a new era for the German automaker. Since then, the company has sold over 5 million AWD cars and we look at the progress it has made over the past three decades. E30 325iX Launched alongside the M3 and strikingly similar to the regular 325i, the 325iX got the latter’s 171 hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-six engine. The permanent AWD system split the power between the front and rear axles in the ratio of 37:63. The engine was paired to the sophisticated Ferguson transmission and viscous coupling was used to automatically transfer power to the axle with the better traction. The front ... Read more

Just like its predecessor high revs and M TwinPower. With an output of 365 bhp at 6,500 rpm and maximum revs of 7,000 rpm this all-new BMW M2 is more powerful than its predecessor: the BMW 1 M Coupe. The 3.0-liter 6-cylinder inline engine in the new BMW M2 sends out a clear message to the high-performance sports car segment. The engine’s peak torque also leads the way in this segment; a full 343 lb-ft is on tap between 1,400 and 5,560 rpm, with the overboost function raising this figure by 26 lb-ft to 369 lb-ft between 1,450 and 4,750 rpm. A glance to the past will put things into perspective, this figure is more than 70 lb-ft of additional torque than the past generation M3, ensuring plenty of torque is available in all driving situations. With the optional M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) in place and Launch Control activated, the new BMW M2 completes the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in a scant 4.2 seconds (4.4 s with the six-speed manual gearbox). The top speed of the all-new BMW M2 is electronically limited to 155 mph. The all-new BMW M2’s newly developed 3.0 liter 6-cylinder ... Read more

Today's Vehicles - The Future Has Already Arrived

Our vehicles already contain a number of energy management innovations that make them amongst the most eco-conscious on the market today. Our engines equipped with Valvetronic® achieve 10-15% gains in fuel efficiency while delivering similar increases in horsepower. Double-VANOS technology optimizes engine breathing, resulting in greater responsiveness with reduced fuel consumption. Lightweight construction technologies such as carbon fibre roofs, aluminum/magnesium engines and lightweight steel further increase fuel efficiency, while optimized aerodynamics reduce drag resulting in decreased CO2 emissions. All of these technologies work in tandem to produce our environmentally responsible, high-performance vehicles of today.

Diesel Vehicles - Powerful and Efficient

Starting in 2008 we introduced clean, high-performance and fuel-efficient diesel engines at BMW. Boasting 25% less CO2 emissions than gasoline engines, BMW diesels will meet the strictest emission regulations proposed for North America without compromising performance.

BMW ActiveHybrid - More Efficiency - More BMW

Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, our internal combustion engines are more economical than ever before. That's no reason for us to rest on our laurels though. In fact, we've already moved on to the next phase of fuel consumption and emissions reductions: BMW ActiveHybrid. This intelligent energy management system will help to achieve further medium-term reductions in fuel use and CO2 emissions. The strengths of electric motors, such as the ability to deliver maximum torque from zero rpm, make them the ideal partner for the sporty and efficient BMW gasoline engines.

BMW presented a hybrid BMW 5 Series as early as 1985. Since then, electronic control systems and batteries have become far more efficient, and the time is now ripe for a hybrid system that offers genuine driving pleasure. That system is BMW ActiveHybrid.

Hydrogen Vehicles - The Future Is Upon Us Today: Hydrogen Power

Our long-term focus is on liquid hydrogen as a sustainable source of automotive energy with virtually zero emissions. With a vast supply, hydrogen in its liquid state acts as an energy-rich fuel that when consumed emits essentially water vapor. BMW recently presented a glimpse into the future with the introduction of the Hydrogen 7, featuring a hydrogen-powered engine. At first glance it resembles a typical BMW 7 Series. But a deeper inspection reveals an internal combustion engine capable of running on liquid hydrogen or, with the press of a button, gasoline. This marvel of technology is already on the road. Production will expand as the infrastructure to support hydrogen vehicles continues to grow.
